Car Rentals In Historic Distric

Looking into a car rental for part of our stay in Charleston in June. Are there any other car rental companies in the Historic District (the only one I%26#39;ve found so far is Enterprise on Meeting Street).

Apparently Budget has a car rental place at 390 Meeting Street, which is just up from the Hampton Inn. As it is on the outskirts of the tourist area, if you use them, consider using their pickup service (which they offer according to their website). Because it is a satellite office their hours are a bit less flexible than if you had rented at the airport.

South of the Border, Gay Dolphin still fun to see?

We are heading down to Myrtle Beach next weekend with our 2 15/16 yr old daughters and a couple of thier friends. It%26#39;s been about 20 years since I have been to Myrtle Beach, and I know alot has changed.

Is South of the Border still a good place to check out? Is there any good restaurants there? And what about the Gay Dolphin, our girls just looked at me wierd when I told them we had to check out the Gay Dolphin. Hard to explain that gift shop. I know its still there...is it still full of everything and anything you would want a name on? Is the Pavilian Nostagia Park anywhere as good as the original Pavillian? Thanks for your input.

South of the Border: Yes, a must-see in my opinion. Though, aside from the fireworks, there%26#39;s nothing worth buying or eating there. See the ';stops along the way'; thread on this board a few pages back for a heated SOTB debate.

Gay Dophin: Same as it ever was. Another must-see. Aside from the closing of the stairs to the roof, I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s changed much at all.

Pavilion Nostalgia Park: Not even close to serving as a replacement for the Pavilion. It wasn%26#39;t meant to be. It%26#39;s more a working museum exhibit. Too bad your daughters missed seeing the Pavilion. :-(

cmjokinen, a couple of years ago, I went to MB for the first time in about 20+ years too.

One of the first places I wanted to go back to was the Gay Dolphin. I tell you....the same stuff....and I mean the SAME EXACT stuff is still in there. Your kids may not appreciate it....but I had a blast looking at the nostalgia. Yes, be sure to go there again. It will bring back lots of memories. You will do plenty of things for your daughters and their friends while you are in Myrtle Beach....do this for YOU!

And I have never stopped at South of Border....but it makes me laugh every time we pass thru it.

I was at the Gay Dolphin a couple of years ago browsing through the postcards and I swear those postcards had been there since the 70%26#39;s or 80%26#39;s...old and faded ones of hotels and attractions long gone. I bet if I go back again this year, those same postcards are there.

And sharks tooth necklaces, painted sand dollars...I think they%26#39;ve had some of the same ones of those for years too.

Not a lot of turnover of the merchandise I%26#39;m thinking but it%26#39;s a MB original and not to be missed.

Pavilion Nostalgia Park is a disappointment...it%26#39;s just a few of the old rides and the German organ located off on one section at Broadway at the Beach. It has none of the flavor or excitement of the actual Pavilion and is in no way a destination attraction...it%26#39;s just a place to see and ride a few of the old rides. 鈽?/p>

Article in MB On-Line a week or so back. Shops along Ocean Blvd having hard time making it without the Pavilion nearby to pull people into the neighborhood.

Sounds like Gay Dolphin has another year or more to go but is on shaky ground. Ordering the the right amount of inventory without knowing what kind of season to expect is a big challange.

Like the old Pavilion. If in the area, you%26#39;d better pay it a visit. Might not be there next trip.

Hey pop2748, are you from Charleston WV? we are stoping there on the way down to MB. What route do you usually take down to MB?

We stopped at South of the Border 1 1/2 years ago on a Thursday around noon and it was a ghost town. I thought that it was run down since what I remember from about 15 years ago. And honestly we didn%26#39;t feel that safe with a lot of questionable characters just hanging around the front of the stores. we got out of there asap. maybe on the weekend there are more tourists and a better atmosphere..

Need HELP! Kid-centered ideas for kids around Hilton Head

My family and I (including two children 12 and 7) are visiting the Hilton Head area in April. In the past we have found that the weather can be a little ';iffy'; for the beach and we are not really that thrilled with arcades and mini-golf.

We will be visiting the grandparents and are looking for activities that we can all enjoy. We have visited Savannah and we LOVED it but we don%26#39;t want to do the same thing again.

Are there any animal preserves around?

We have heard about the dolphin cruises. Which would you recommend?

We like to do historical things - are there any fun and interesting museums, historic houses or communities to visit?

We would be interested in anything up to one hour away.

Daufuskie Island cruise with the golf cart rental for touring the island is neat. Beaufort is a short drive north with plenty of historical homes to see. There are plenty of bike trails for the kids and grownups to ride.

swizzo: I second Beaufort. It%26#39;s really cute. You can also cross over to the other islands nearby there. Forest Gump was filmed in Beaufort. The historic district is very picturesque. The do horse %26amp; buggy tours there.

As for dolphin cruises, we have done 3. In March we did the Commander Zodiac out of South Beach Marina. It is recommended by BBC/Discovery/Nat%26#39;l Geographic. We loved it. They take you to where the dolphins are. If you spot them, they zoom you there. We saw loads, up close. We also did the Stars %26amp; Stripes 65%26#39; sailboat excursion. F-U-N! For the more adventurous as you have to move from side to side when the boat changes tack. What a feeling with the sail swooshing overhead. You are under full sail for 2 hrs. We had dolphins swimming alongside. Very cool. Look for coupons. If you pay cash they will discount your ticket and reimburse your $5.00 Sea Pines gate fee that you must pay to enter Sea Pines Plantation. Both Harbourtown and South Beach Marina are in Sea Pines. We also have done the dolphin Kayak tour out of South Beach Marina. Was fun, saw some dolphins, not up close though. Lawton Stables is fun. You ride through the nature reserve. Our son is 15 so our interests are different than yours, but hope this helps. Bikes are a MUST for the whole family, even for a day.

Two days only! Should we include a harbor tour?

After reading this forum and getting all the suggestions of things to see and do, I wish we had two weeks! I hate to miss anything, but I%26#39;m wondering if a harbor tour, although beautiful, I%26#39;m sure, should be part of a two-day schedule. What would we miss by not taking such a tour? We%26#39;re not especially interested in Fort Sumter.

We%26#39;re planning on getting the Heritage Passport, so visiting those sites will take quite a bit of time. Also, would like to take either a carriage or motor tour, not sure which. Some say we would see more on a bus tour. And, if we can get tickets to the Glorious Gardens tour, I see that is on the Thursday we are there. I wish we could do everything. You people who live in Charleston are sooo lucky!

If the weather is great, you ';must'; take the carriage tour. Sure, if it rains, the bus tour makes sense. I was just on the Glorious Gardens tour and it never disappoints. You get a real feeling for how people live when you see their gardens, and the foliage should be breathtaking. You cannot leave here without wanting to make your own yard look like a Charleston garden.

Ft. Sumter? for a 2-day trip I%26#39;d say just get a feel for the city, find a ';must stay'; hotel for your next trip, which will no doubt be longer, and smell the roses (literally). Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the residential district, the carriage ride, shopping on Market St, the Waterfront Park, King Street, and some great leisurely dining (like at 82 Queen for lunch or dinner). Visit a historic home or two, like the Calhoun Mansion.

And at least 3 times a day I still say how lucky I feel living here - you are so right! But every part of the country has something great to offer for sure. :)

You can catch the water taxi from the aquarium and ride across the harbor to Patriot%26#39;s Point. It%26#39;s nice to ride on the harbor even if you don%26#39;t go over to Sumter. I think Patriot%26#39;s Point is one of the best attractions in Charleston. Best wishes.

Thanks, I appreciate all your suggestions. I hadn%26#39;t even thought of the water taxi. We%26#39;re staying at Shem Creek Inn, so perhaps we could leave our car there and catch the water taxi over. I am so looking forward to seeing what%26#39;s in bloom. We do like a little history, too, but need a touch of spring. Winter has been hanging on too long in Indiana, just had another light snow yesterday.

Golfing question

my girlfriend and i are comin down in 10 days and i want to get some golf in. My question is since she dont play is there a course that will allow her to ride along with me and not have to pay full price for a round, or not at all, it would seem pretty crappy if she had to pay $30-40 to ride in a cart?

Also what course would allow this? This will be my first time golfin in mb, but second time there. Would like to be near broadway at the beach area, or grande shores resort area. Notin too pricey and crowded. Thanks andy

Last year Man O War allowed my wife to ride for free.

the legends courses are pretty pricey, and man o war is like 20 miles from my hotel. I found river oaks plantation bout 8 miles from my hotel they charge $10 for a rider and $55 for a round. Not bad considering some of the prices ive seen. Has anyone played this course and if so is it decent...thanks andy

To be honest River Oaks is not one of your better conditioned courses but they had 1 or 2 nines closed last year for some upgrading.Lots of condos on some holes also.So close on one hole they had a large fence like you would see at some driving ranges lining the left side of the tee box for about 100yds out.

Nearly all will allow a non-playing wife to ride for free...$10 at some courses.

I don%26#39;t think she will have to pay anything at just about any course.

One full day in Charleston

OK, we will arrive in Charleston late in the evening, staying 2 nights, so we will have one full day. Are there any full day tours that take you to the different historical sites? Or is the only option to be on your own, to go to each home/plantation or site, to tour individually? And which area would be the best to stay without breaking the bank?

I%26#39;m just not familiar with Charleston %26amp; we do not have a set date, yet. Is there a better time to come when it isn%26#39;t too crowded but weather good? I just hoping there won%26#39;t be lines to stand in, to enter the homes. Is that common?

One full day in Charleston

We have found the best dates are mid May or late September. The weather is usally great then not to hot or to cool. Contact the Visitors Center about tours they have any info and discout coupons you may need.I think they have a toll free number if not drop them a email. Most hotels are are high in the downtown area Mt Pleasent has some fair hotels-motels. We usally rent a beach house which are fairly reasonable at the times I mentioned. But that does involve a little driving if you wish to see the historic areas. As for the crowds we have never had to wait for a tour or plantation visit but the eateries downtown are a different story.

One full day in Charleston

First, click on ';Map'; to the left since you said you%26#39;re not familiar with Charleston - that%26#39;ll help you get a perspective.

Places to stay - downtown is always going to be higher than Mt. Pleasant, but you almost have to have a car if you stay in Mt. P.

Sure, there are tours that take you to historical sites - they will include transportation and admission and many people are happy to do that. Look under ';Things to Do'; and check out some of those pages.

As far as crowds, I have yet to attend an event in Charleston where I%26#39;ve said ';Boy, too bad we went to that, it was too crazy';. I%26#39;ve never been on a line that has been too long. In fact, I have to say the contrary - we went to see a big show at the Convention Center and were shocked that we could park only 2 rows from the front door even though we arrived close to the start time of the show.

Sure, Charleston gets millions of visitors and it%26#39;s a very small city, but there is so much to do at all times of year that people pick what they like to do and come visit when it%26#39;s best to do that. (ie: Spoleto, beaches, home and garden tours, Christmas events, whatever). Although the summertime is hot and humid, people who come and visit then get our best beach weather and enjoy delightfully warm water for swimming. I guess if you decide what you most want to do , tell us and we%26#39;ll let you know when it%26#39;s best to do that.

If you want to avoid crowds then you might want to avoid The Spoleto Festival (May 23rd - June 8th). Although it%26#39;s a great time of the year to visit and the Spoleto festival is lots of fun it can get rather crowded downtown.

Another suggestion if you visit in the summer is to maybe rent a house/ villa near the beach. Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms, Sullian%26#39;s Island and Folly beaches are only a 15-20 minute easy drive into downtown Charleston.

Have always heard that Charleston is a beautiful city to visit. Would like to visit for 3 days in September. Would prefer not to rent a car....is Charleston and it%26#39;s main attractions easy to do without a car?

If you want to stay right downtown and see what%26#39;s in the old city, you can do it. But , if you want to see the plantations and Patriot%26#39;s Point, beaches, etc... you%26#39;ll either have to pay for a tour like Grayline or rent a car. I think it would be cheaper to rent a car. Correction - you can take the water taxi from the Aquarium over to Patriot%26#39;s Point. Wear your good walking shoes!!! LOL.

If you can come in LATE Sept or early Oct - all the better. The Preservation Society has its fall tours of Homes and Gardens. (We have them going on now but they end in mid-April.) You could do everything downtown and never leave. http://preservationsociety.org/ :)
