We are a family of 4 trying to figure if myrtle beach is the place for us from dec26-dec31 this year?? What can we expect the normal weather to be durring our stay? We are trying to find a beach destination for this period of time and we%26#39;ve done the florida thing to death and want to look else where. Any help would be great regarding weather water temps and the such...

Brrr! Even though there might be some warmer days, it is definitely winter! Not beach weather if you are comparing it to Florida beaches.

Depends on what your family likes to do. Lots of groups enjoy golfing in the winter, going to shows or shopping. Temps can be quite mild for those sort of things %26amp; definitely warmer than Chicago.

We go every year around Christmas/New Year%26#39;s. We love it that time of year because it%26#39;s not crazy crowded but there are still a lot of things to do. One year we had 72潞 and another year we had 55潞. Nothing is certain. If you%26#39;re looking for a fun place to spend time with your family and friends you will find plenty to do. If you are looking to get a tan and go swimming, not a good choice.

Marriott Resort & Spa vs. Hilton Oceanfront

I am having a difficult time choosing between these two resorts for my honeymoon at the end of September. In the interest of trying to stay closer to home so we do not have to pay for airfare (we are coming from Raleigh, NC) we have decided to go to Hilton Head (I originally wanted to go to Mexico, but too expensive to fly). I have looked at the reviews and pictures of both of these resorts, but am still having a difficult time choosing. We are looking for a place that has a resort feel to it and has great beach access. I was looking for a place that has a poolside bar and was wondering if anyone knows how late into the season the bars/restaurants at these two places stay open....we will be going from Sept. 28th thru Oct. 3rd. Also, does anyone know if they have any rules about bringing coolers to the pool/beach with your own beverages in the case that the bar is closed?

It seems that the Hilton has better restaurants to choose from, but we would probably only need to eat at the resort for breakfast and maybe lunch and we would probably go into town for dinner...I also read that the Hilton is within walking distance to restaurants...is this also the case for the Marriott?

Also, are you able to have a nice view of the beach from the pool area at the Hilton? There seems to be a lot of trees and I was wondering if anyone could comment on which of these resorts has a nicer pool area.

Marriott Resort %26amp; Spa vs. Hilton Oceanfront

These two hotels are only about 500 yards apart on the beach. Both are located in Palmetto Dunes, but the Hilton is behind a gate and the Marriott is not.

Both have poolside bars, but the Hilton is more laid back. The rooms there also have kitchenettes so you can make breakfast.

You should have no problem with coolers, since the beach is public and town property and not part of the hotel.

My personal preference, and others who have posted is go for the Hilton.

Marriott Resort %26amp; Spa vs. Hilton Oceanfront

We have previously stayed at both of the hotels. Very few of the Hilton rooms have an actual beach view. Most look out onto a lagoon/garden area that has a jungle like quality to it. All of the rooms at the Marriott, with the exception of those on the back side of the main building, have some kind of beach view, if not a beachfront view.

Beach access is about the same at both hotels. The Marriott%26#39;s pool is right on the beach, and has lots of chairs and umbrellas. There are several nooks and crannies on the pool deck where you can set up and literally be right at the very edge of the beach.

We were at the Marriott at the end of last September, and the pool bars at both hotels were open (and quite lively, I might add). We mixed adult beverages in plastic stadium cups and went wherever we wanted to, even on the pool deck where waitresses were serving $10.00 cocktails to guests. No one hassled us.

If you are of a mind to try it, these hotels can be gotten at a huge discount on *****line. They are in the ';resort'; category, along with the Westin and Intercontinental. You would have a better than 50% chance of getting the Hilton or the Marriott. Of course, you have pay up front, but we got the Marriott last September for $80.00 a night.

I have stayed at both resorts over the last 2 years, and I really preferred the Hilton. The layout and the pool are nicer at the Marriott. The rooms and bars and price is better at the Hilton.

Neither resort is walking distance for restuarants other than whats on each resort and alexanders (wich doesnt have good review, I have never tried it though).

Both of the pools have beach visability, and are basically on the beach. I am guessing that you are younger than 35 so it seems like the Hilton has a better vibe for your age, but that is just my opinion. Good luck and Congrats

Kiawah Construction on Tennis Club Lane Lagoon

We are interested in renting a villa located on the lagoon on Tennis Club Lane. We%26#39;ve been told that there is a lot of construction across the lagoon from the villa, and we are concerned about noise and unpleasantries during our vacation from the construction. Does anyone know anything about this construction and what type of noise it presents. We are looking to rent in June 2008. Thanks so much!

There are four, small, low-rise luxury condo buildings being built across the lagoon from Tennis Club Lane.

As of November, construction was in full swing, but I doubt that they will be completed by June 2008. Even if you do not hear the noise, you will see the site whenever you look across the lagoon, and you will walk by it on your way to the beach.

When completed the condos will blend with the surroundings and be lovely; for now, a construction site with all the trucks, etc., might not ';blend'; with your idea of a Kiawah vacation.

Yes.

The construction is actually along Green Dolphin Way, at the end closest to The Sanctuary Hotel. (The site is across the lagoon from Tennis Club Lane.) The construction of a new low-rise condo is still in full swing, with cranes, trucks, etc. The activity will continue well into summer 2008.

From a villa on the 17th green, you would not see the construction, since you are facing the golf course. However, you would be accessing your villa along Green Dolphin Way (along with the trucks, etc.), you might hear some noise during the day, and you would pass the sight when walking to the hotel, the pool, etc.

Otherwise, the 17th green (and Green Dolphin Way) is an excellent location.

Very poor customer relations at Compass Cove!

We recently stayed in the Pinnacle building for a week. We had a nice visit with friends who have been going there for five years now. Even they were dismayed at the story I am about to relate. When we arrived, Compass Cove would not honour the quote they had given us by telephone and by email before our trip and we forgot to bring the email as proof. They charged us a higher rate saying they had no record of the lower offer. Once home, I forwarded them the email they had sent me as proof of my claim. I asked them to refund the difference. To date, they refuse to reply to any of my correspondence! This is very unprofessional behaviour. They obviously do not want repeat business from us in the future. We drove 1,200 miles from Ontario, Canada only to be refused the lower rate which they had promised. Obviously, I am not happy with them. If they would have answered my emails with an apology and a promise of a refund, I would not be writing this now. They do not appear to be a very honest Resort using this instance as an example. To top it all off, our stay was very noisy. They could have told us in the outset that they were renovating in February but did not. The Lazy River was closed as well. That was a highlight we were looking forward to enjoying. We could have scheduled for March instead and had a much more pleasant stay. Beware of the Compass Cove Oceanfront Resort at 2311 South Ocean Blvd, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577, everyone. Bring proof of your reservation if you do go there at all. Beware!

Was it a conformation from where you made reservations online orwas it just an e-mail saying thatthey would give you a lower rate? If it was the conformation from were you booked online then they should have honored that price.

Since posting to this forum, I have been in contact with a very helpful Compass Cove Manager. As it turns out, their server was rejecting my emails for some reason so they were not aware I was trying to contact them. Most of our correspondence had to be made by Message in Tripadvisor. I received the requested refund and a heartfelt apology for the inconvenience. Also I%26#39;ve been told that Compass Cove has recently undergone a management change at the top and are refocusing on guest service as a top priority. This is good news for future guests! I would still advise everyone to bring proof of your reservation and any emails promising lower rates with you where ever you go to vacation.

HOWEVER...I was one of many guests shuffled around or dislodged earlier this year in the Pinnacle building due to the disruptive renovations that nobody had been informed of. It sounds as if those who were not still had noise and closed ammenities to deal with and should have been forewarned.

CC still neeeds to be held accountable for this.

This post is a good warning to everyone about the importance of bringing documentation - perhaps especially for any reservations made primarily by tlephone and over the internet. It seems like if places get booked, and they see the chance to make some extra $$$, they will try any tactic to gouge the customer.

We have had an almost identical situation at a resort in Florida (which is now out of business). Even though I had my printed deposit receipt and confirmation in hand, the front desk still insisted that they had no record of us and acted like they were doing us a favor to ';squeeze us in'; (and ';especially at THAT price';).

They escorted us first to a dilaptidated room that was clearly not what we had reserved. Only because I held my ground and, since my parents were staying nearby and ready to accommodate us in a pinch, did they finally come up with a (surprise!) appropriate room that was ';just vacated';.

FYI - They, too, ultimately blamed ';computer problems'; for the confusion. I suppose I will never really know ...

Surfside beach - is everything within walking distance?

Hello TA! I rented a house from Dunes Realty in Surfside Beach and I was wondering if the town is small enough for things to be within walking distance. None of us have licenses, so we won%26#39;t be driving (we live in an area where a car is not needed). The house is 2.4 miles from the Garden City Pier. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You are not within walking distance unless you are comfortable walking 2.4 miles. At the pier are a few bars, 2 game arcades and couple of beach shops, an ice cream shop and Sam%26#39;s Corner that has sandwiches. You are probably 5 miles from a grocery store. You might want to talk to Dunes Realty and see if you can find something closer, but you would still have to take a taxi to the grocery store or to restaurants and entertainment. If you could get close to the Surfside Pier, you would be walking distance to restaurants. The Surfside pier is about 3 miles north of the Garden City Pier.

Surfside is a great little area. There are several restaurants within walking distance. There is also a pier in Surfside. Ocean Drive is just a few short blocks from the main highway where you can find a pharmacy, etc. Across the highway (it%26#39;s very busy) are grocery stores.

You will not find the Grand Strand easy without a car because of the lack of public transportation. Still, it can be done if you just want a laid back week at the beach %26amp; don%26#39;t mind limited choices for dinner, etc.

Some of the threads mention a service that delivers groceries to vacation rentals.

Heated pools in the summer

I have spent much time and effort, but still have not managed to find a hotel/resort that advertises heated indoor and/or outdoor pools. I will be there during the last two weeks of June, and most resorts stop heating pools for the summer. I absolutely detest cold pools, and unfortunately one of my kids is the same way. Can anyone help?

Well I don%26#39;t know if this helps but at the hotels we%26#39;ve stayed in in MB, the pools were not that cold at all. They are the earlier you go in the morning.

Also what helps too is if you get in the Hot Tub/Whirlpool for a few minutes then jump in the pool, it won%26#39;t seem as cold that way.

Trust me you will have nothing to worry about. The pools will be plenty warm, inside or out.

Thanks, but I have stayed at the Caravelle and Ocean Forest Plaza in prior years and the pools were not always warm enough. The Ocean Forest Plaza would heat the indoor pool, but not consistenty.

I have stayed at Carolina Winds the first week of June the last two years and their huge pool has felt like bathwater.

They should be warm enough. I%26#39;m the opposite. If it is ot outside then the colder the better for the pools I htink.

I have worked for 2 property mgmt companies in MB and NMB and I can%26#39;t think of any resort, anymore, that will pay the exhorbantant cost to heat an outdoor pool. A tiny small pool can cost $1500/mos to heat. You would be the only person in June wanting a warm pool I can assure you. I can%26#39;t imagine an indoor pool in June, it its not heated, that would not be warm either.

When we stay at The Breakers Resort The indoor pools are heated much like bath water.. but the the outdoor pools are not because of the warm weather. It stays warm durring the winter or so it has been in our past trips.

I can%26#39;t imagine wanting an outdoor heated pool in June. It will be hot enough outside by then that pools should all be warm naturally.

I don%26#39;t think you are going to find any hotel that will spend the incredible amount of money it takes to heat an outdoor pool with daytime temps in the upper 80%26#39;s low 90%26#39;s. It%26#39;s totally unnecessary

I work onsite at a North Myrtle Beach property, when I checked out what was available on VRBO for our resort, I noticed multiple listings where the owners state the outdoor pools are heated in the winter, they are not and haven%26#39;t been since the first year the property was built.

So if you do see something on-line that says heated I do suggest you call and confirm. But I truly doubt you will find anything heated.

I%26#39;ve narrowed my search to 2 hotels at Myrtle Beach.

We are a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 teenagers aged 17,15,and 12). We are planning our vacation from July 12th to July 26th for 2 weeks.

We are looking at the Holiday Inn at the Pavillion or

Monteray bay Suites. What is your advise?

Any suggestion would be apprecaited.

Monteray Bay is at a much better location (imo). I%26#39;m not sure how the pavillion closing has affected the hotels near there, but Monteray Bay would still be my choice between those two.

Haven%26#39;t stayed at either but from what I have seen from them by visiting I would definitley go with the Monterey Bay. I don%26#39;t like the location of the HI. It%26#39;s a little too congested in that area.

Monterey Bay suites is the better choice of the two. It is cleaner and more up to date. I%26#39;ve stayed several times. Holiday Inn at the Pavillion will be way overcrowded during that time period. It%26#39;ll be hard getting in and out of the hotel and hard to get even out of the parking.

Monteray Bay, is def better location

I believe the Holiday Inn at the Pavillion is now the Westgate. Its located adjacent to a swash, meaning the sewer, drainage from roads, etc drain right into the ocean at that particular location, meaning high bacteria levels can be present in the water. I suggest Monteray Bay.
