Is Wizard GC closing for new condo';s?

I read in a MB Newsletter that the Wizard GC may be closing so as to build new condos. Is this true? Does anyone have any further info on this? We just bought a condo in Windsor Green that fronts the Wizard. I hope this isn%26#39;t Murphys Law'; in play.

I heard the prior covenants would prevent this. Also that local homeowners/property owners will fight it tooth and nail.

Appx 20+ golf courses have closed in the area due to demand for housing property though. These include 2 at Deertrack, 3 courses at Bay Tree, 2.5 courses at Wild Wing, 1 at Belle Terre, Azalea Sands, Beachwood, and a few others. It was and is a market adjustment.

I would call your HOA if you have one, or call the Wizard themselves to get the scoop. It%26#39;d be a shame if they are still considering it.

It%26#39;s a freaking shame if they do. The Grand Strand is not keeping up with entertainment and things to do...in my opinion. It%26#39;s going backwards on things vacationers look for for the numbers that go. Poor planning and incentives for entertainment and travel (roads).

I think you saw an old newsletter from 2006. The County would not allow the rezoning so the Wizard is safe from redevelopment.

I plan to visit Myrtle Beach this summer with my husband and two children. How is the public transportation there? We%26#39;re wondering if it%26#39;s necessary to rent a car.

Myrtle Beach is a very big area. You will definitely need a car.

I would deff. rent a car. If your a big attraction visitor like my family you%26#39;d spend more money taking cabs than it would be to rent a car. U-Save car rental has great rates. There is a public trolly which costs $1 a person to get on but its not always dependable. :) happy voyages

Beach Renourishing Update from the City of Myrtle Beach

Just got this very helpful update from the town:

Thanks for inquiring. Yes, this is a renourishment year. When finished, we%26#39;ll have a new and bigger beach to enjoy, as well as to provide additional protection from the ocean. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for the project and has hired a company to do the work.

They%26#39;ve completed Reach 3, the southern end of the Grand Strand. Latest word is that they will start on Reach 2 (Myrtle Beach proper) in mid-April and continue until the first week of July. In Myrtle Beach, the work will begin at Second Avenue Pier and then move southward to the city limits.

In June, the contractor will work on the northern section of Myrtle Beach. Currently, the plan is to start on the northern end, around 82nd Avenue, and work south to Second Avenue Pier. However, we would prefer that they work from Second Avenue Pier to the north, although we do not know whether they will accept that request.

Work will move into North Myrtle Beach (Reach 1) in early July and continue in North Myrtle Beach through mid-August. Of course, schedules are subject to Mother Nature, as well as to equipment gremlins, but the project has moved pretty quickly so far.

In fact, the work moves quickly on the beach, too, at a rate of 500 to 1,000 feet a day. The contractor does work around the clock, so the beach in front of a particular location may be in accessible for a day or so, until the project moves on. A short walk to the north or south, though, will get you around the project. Of course, many people enjoy watching the work, which is pretty fascinating.

Beach Renourishing Update from the City of Myrtle Beach

Hi Gold Wine Lover,

Would you know which area of Myrtle Beach the Beach Colony Resort (5308 N. Ocean Blvd.) is in? I%26#39;m trying to figure out when that area will be renourished. I will be vacationing there at the end of August with a large group and would really appreciate any info. on the area where were staying at. Thanks in advance!

Reading a couple of boards. Letters from City of MB, Chamber of Commerce and Corps of Engineers have been posted. I don%26#39;t think any of them are on same page.

Probably typed out form leters and didn%26#39;t change the information as project progressed.

Think it was Corps of Engineers letter that had NMB phase starting late August. City letter has them finished up there in August. Chamber of Commerce acts like it isn%26#39;t happening.

Reports from locals and recent visitors have said they are in North end of MB and working south. To add to the confusion it sounds like there might be some storm drain work being done. People are seeing that and reporting it as renourishment project.

I feel safe with our May Garden City trip. August trip in Ocean Drive......Keeping fingers crossed. Will make best of what ever good Lord decides I get this year.......

I have reservations at sandy beach resort, which is located 201 S. Ocean Blvd, the last week of June. Does anyone have an idea when they will be working in that area?

I read somewhere on here that work in MB will begin in ';mid-April'; at the Second Avenue Pier and move southward.

It is also helpful for you to go to mapquest and type in your hotel/resort address to see how the streets run. It may help you guesstimate.

We are staying at Compass Cove in August... will this affect us in that area???? Thanks : )

Comments on these Murrells Inlet Restaurants (and Surfside)?

We%26#39;re heading out for our annual trip in a couple of weeks. This year we%26#39;re staying in Surfside. I%26#39;m putting together my restaurant/food listings and have been interested in a couple of new (to us) places to try. Is anybody familiar with these places?

Cakes by Design %26amp; Bakery (Bypass 17 in Murrells Inlet). Looks like a lot of interesting bakery goods. Good place to go to buy baked goods for a large family renting a house?

Blackwater Brews (Bypass 17 in Murrells Inlet). Apparently serves microbrew beer and coffee. Anybody tried the beers? Is it a good place for lunch? It looks like it might be a bit limited.

Harrelson%26#39;s Seafood Market (Business 17 in Murrells Inlet). Good place to buy seafood to cook at our rental? How%26#39;s the prepared seafood for to eat there for lunch?

Prosser%26#39;s BBQ (Business 17 Murrells Inlet). I%26#39;ve seen lots of good reviews of this locals place. We are huge fried chicken fans looking for a new place since JD%26#39;s Pig %26amp; Chicken closed. The reviews focus on the buffets at Prosser%26#39;s. Can you just get takeout fried chicken?

We%26#39;re also looking forward to trying out El Patio in Surfside. Looks like a good place for the guys to go for lunch after golf and for the whole family for lunch or dinner.

We%26#39;ve gone to Anthony%26#39;s (Glens Bay Rd., Surfside) for pizza before. We like the pizza, but we don%26#39;t like their pizza pickup system (you have to get your pickups from the bar and their bartenders are often so overwhelmed with bar service you can wait forever to get your pizzas that are sitting there rapidly cooling off). I%26#39;ve seen a couple of positive mentions of Antipastos (apparently also known as Michael%26#39;s?) in Surfside. Is this a good place to order pizza for pickup?

If you are a pizza snob like we are you need to try Nico%26#39;s. It is on 17 in Garden City right across from Kroger%26#39;s. Somewhat $$ but a good pizza is worth the $$. And for a really good steak or prime rib on the same side as Kroger%26#39;s is the Texas Roadhouse.Very reasonable and very good food.

Thanks for the pizza advice. We%26#39;ll try to check out Nico%26#39;s. We do like the Texas Roadhouse. We often go there for lunch on the day we arrive.

Ultimate California Pizza is fantastic. We always order if for delivery the first night we arrive, when we are too tired to go out. There is one in Surfside and one in Garden City.

I definitely recommend El Patio in Surfside...real Mexicans...delicious Mexican food. We always look forward to eating there our first night of vacation.

I like Ultimate California Pizza as well...gotten delivery from them many times and eaten at the one at Barefoot Landing. My favorite pizza though is from Pizza ala Roma in Myrtle...so good.

I don%26#39;t think Ultimate California Pizza will be on our list, though. I love both NY style and Chicago style pizza, but I just can%26#39;t stand California style. We lived in San Francisco for several years and I never found a pizza I loved. California Pizza Kitchen and Wolfgang Puck%26#39;s pizzas started while we were there and that was when I first saw the abomination that is chicken on a pizza. That%26#39;s just wrong! And broccolli on a pizza??? Onions, peppers, garlic and mushrooms OK, but other veggies go in your side salad!

Whew, what a rant! I know lots of people love Ultimate California Pizza. It%26#39;s just not for me. I do very much appreciate your taking the time to reply to my post.

Michaels has amazing italian food. I really recommend it. Pizza is also good.

If your family is into Japanese food Myabi%26#39;s is an amazing place to eat. They do the cooking and a cute show right in front of you.

Just wanted to see if anyone could answer the following questions:

1) how is the weather down there this week (4/14-4/20).

2) will there be fireworks at shelter cove this week?

3) how busy will things be and will the crowdes be focused on Sea Pines or all over.

1 - The weather us almost always very pleasant. April and October are the very best months for playing golf here. Though last year the tournament was postponed after 1:00 PM on Sunday due to Gale Force Winds. I have attended the tournament for the last 22 years, and never seen anything like it.

2 - Shelter Cove Fireworks do not begin until June 2nd

3 - Count on taking an Hour to get to the tournament. Sea Pines Traffic is extremely congested from Thursday to Sunday. Heritage week is the busiest week of the year surpassing our summer weeks. If you plan to dine in a restaurant, reservations are a must.

On a happier note

I am tired of all the posts about the beach renourishment. If it happens it happens. It is obviously being done for a good reason and I am still booking with the Dunes whether it is out in front of my condo every day! A vacation is what you make of it! It could also rain every day are you going to pack up and leave?

So on a better note lets all remember why we wanted to vacation at Myrtle in the first place. Where is or has been your favorite spot to visit while you were at Myrtle Beach.

Mine was the Pavillion when I was a young girl and we use to stay at a condo called ';A Place at the Beach';. They use to have so many gorgeous lifeguards on that part of the beach:)

To walk on the beach just before dawn, to enjoy the serenity and only the sound of the surf, with a large mug of Starbucks Breakfast Blend.

The one thing we look forward to doing every single year is going to Margaritaville. Last summer%26#39;s visit was ruined though because while we were sitting at the bar drinking our margaritas and waiting for our call ahead seating time, the fire sprinklers went off and totally flooded the whole restaurant. Everyone had to be cleared out and they closed down...so we pretty much missed out. We ended up at Joe%26#39;s Crab Shack which is good food but not the experience that Margaritaville is. Hopefully this year nothing crazy will happen.

You know, one of our best trips to MB was during the last renourishment project (about 10 years ago). When we arrived, the project had just passed our hotel. For the entire week, we found the most amazing shells and full conche shells. We decorated our living room with those wonderful shells, and still talk about it today!

My favorite spot at Myrtle would be at any of the fabulous golf courses, either with my Father 25-30 years ago, or now with my teenage son.

I love to see my beautiful sunrise mornings come up out of the ocean while I have a cup of coffee. Sometimes I even catch a Dolphin or two. Then in the evening we go to the Kingfisher Pier or have a drink @ Seamour%26#39;s By The Sea. Seamours is just off Atlantic Ave in Garden City. Around the corner from Sams hotdog place. It is a tiny place owened by Jerry Seamour. Tiny place but the owner is a real nice guy.

O.K. Last update on the re-nourishing Program,

I decided to go right to the source. I contacted the Army Core Of Engineers directly. Here is what I have.

:Thank you for contacting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District. Due to flooding out West, the Great Lakes Dredge %26amp; Dock Company, LLC will aid in the emergency dredging project in the Mississippi Delta area. The dredges being used for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Myrtle Beach Shore Protection Project will be used in this emergency effort. As a result, a new schedule has been created. The major shift in the schedule is moving the Myrtle Beach area renourishment from March-July 2008 to September 2008. Here is the new schedule: Reach 1 (North Myrtle Beach) - begin July 5 Reach 2 (Myrtle Beach) - immediately following Reach 1; begin in September ,depending on weather delays Reach 3 (Garden City Beach/Surfside Beach) - Fully Completed (late March2008) If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Girls Trip

My girlfriends and I are planning a 5 day trip to Myrtle Beach in June. Any suggestions on a hotel/resort that would be fun to stay at with few kids? Also looking for something close to the nightlife.

Breakers Resort is amazing for kids and adults. Right in the heart of Myrtle Beach. Have tons of kid activities.. and during the summer months they even have a childrens activity program during the summer for children 5 and up. I reccomend this resort to anyone and everyone who wants a nice play to stay thats in the middle of everything. Nightlife is literally not even a mile away from this resort.
