Inverness, Bugs?

My family and I are returning to Palmetto Dunes this June. We stayed outside of PD for four nights last year and then did three nights at the Hilton (loved it!) We really want to stay the whole week in PD this year because we loved it so much but the Hilton is a bit out of our budget for a week%26#39;s stay. Have looked at lots of more reasonable condos like St. Andrews, Hickory Cove, Queens Grant, Turnbury, and Inverness. I am very concerned about roaches!! My mom and dad stayed in a high priced condo last spring outside of PD and brought home a HUGE roach in their luggage!! I saw it and it was several inches long. My teenaged girls and I are very concerned about having a clean and a bug free condo. Can anyone confirm that any of these more reasonable units are clean and exterminated well. I saw a scary posting about one unit (not any of the ones I mentioned above). The people found three roaches, took them to the management and were told ';so what, and too bad';. I do not want to pay $1200 a week for a buggy condo. Does anyone have advice or assurances?

Inverness, Bugs?

Bugs are a fact of life in a sub-tropical climate. The Palmetto Bugs (a.k.a. giant flying cockroaches) live outside, and they do get into homes. They move very quickly. They can sneak in wherever there is a crack, and whenever you go in or out. You can help to limit the problem by not leaving unscreened doors and windows open. Also, do not store paper grocery bags or cardboard boxes inside the house, since the bugs seem to hitch rides in these containers.

If you see a lot of active bugs inside the house, you should complain; however, even regular pest control cannot keep the bugs from coming inside. Pest control can only insure that the bugs die before they have time to take up residence. Finding a dead or dying bug is normal, and it is a good indicator that pest control is doing its job.

The good news is that the Palmetto Bugs are harmless, and they are in no way associated with filth - unlike their northern, city cousins.

Inverness, Bugs?

There is one thing to know about palmeto bugs that they are resistant to roach spray worse than the bugs you find around the nonclostal areas. Our sister-in-law who lived in Charleston had them and moved to uper SC where she infested two apartments in her complex and we had a bad time killing them, Orkin gave a refund back to the apartment complex because they could not get rid of them. This is why it is important to watch where you stay, bugs become resistant to spray when exposed to it a lot as in costal areas. They have to spray a lot to keep the bug problems down.

I did forget to say that we have not found it to be a big problem when we have traveled in the areas of the coast because we check out the places on trip advisor and then call the rental agency to ask questions. You will find that most places are required to keep infestations down by the health department. And in 20 years we have only had one problem with a buggy rental and that was in Myrtle Beach.

Ask your questions, do your reasearch and then go and have fun!

Our Palmetto Bugs are a fact of life here. They are however a version of beetle and not a cockroach.

Every Condo association has a contract with an exterminating company, and just about every contract stipulates 30 days. However, if a tenant refuses to admit the exterminator ( and many do). He can do nothing but skip treatment for that 30 days.

When you check in look for the exterminators schedule sheet. You can usually find it just inside a kitchen cabinet door. It will tell you the date of the last treatment. If it%26#39;s more than a month, pick up a can of Raid ';flying Bug'; spray and spray around the windows, doors and if the unit is carpeted, also where the carpet meets the wall. that will usually take care of any potential problem.

Fishing trips with kids

I plan on going to MB this summer with my kids ages 8 %26amp; 9 and wanted to know if its better to rent a boat or take the kids out on a fishing trip?

Fishing trips with kids

There are many places along the Grand Strand that offer charter fishing trips...half day...full day...overnight ...whatever you want... and includes rod and reel, bait, license, etc. If you google %26#39;Myrtle Beach charter fishing%26#39;, there is a list of business that pops up right away.

Pier fishing is another option. My kids always loved (and still love) to do that.

Fishing trips with kids

if your looking for cost efficent fishing any of the peirs at myrtle or even north myrtle don%26#39;t cost to much to access and you can stay on there all day. Kids love it. I see many people fishing or just even walking along the peirs.. its very peaceful and a lot of fun. If not there are several places that do the boat fishing.

Input on Caribbean Resort & Villas

Has anyone stayed recently at the Caribbean Resort %26amp; Villas? We have reservations to stay there in the near future. I have read most of the reviews, and overall they have been pretty favorable. However, the last review that was submitted has me feeling a little uneasy about the place. It sounds like this person stayed in the same tower (The Dominican Oceanfront Suite) and the same type of suite (King Oceanfront Suite) that we have our reservations at. This is the tower that they advertise as being completely renovated. Can anyone give me any input on a recent stay there? Thanks in advance!

Input on Caribbean Resort %26amp; Villas

Posted the below review last September, but can%26#39;t find the original. If you look at the reviews, they seem 9-to-1 very positive.

Check-in: Check-in seemed slow as we arrived at ~2pm Saturday which is “prime time”. Parking in the front loading area is bad during the afternoon check-in rush (1-5pm). Next visit we will arrive early, pre-register and let the kids start swimming/beaching. By pre-registering, you get in a shorter line to pickup the key at 3pm, and can move major items from the car later in the day.

Rooms: Dominican Rooms are very clean and in great shape with new carpet, draperies, bedspreads, dressers, countertops, etc. Similar layout as other resorts: enter into a typical hotel room with 2 doubles or a king, shotgun full-size kitchen (very clean) with bathroom on opposite side. Oceanfront living area with small dining table and 4 chairs, loveseat, TV armoire and double Murphy bed w/boxspring. Some small items appear a little “old” as they were not replaced during the refurbishment, such as door knobs, lights switches, etc.

Amenities: Pools were very clean with lots of attendants constantly cleaning, emptying trash, etc. No stench of chlorine. The “water park” isn’t really a water park, but does have cute stuff for toddlers. An adult slide was just installed Spring 08, but we haven%26#39;t seen it. Overall, great customer service from the maids, front desk, etc. Note – we did not ask much from the maids as the “ladies” liked to sleep in til ~noon.

Thanks so much for your reply, AA County. I appreciate the info. By the way, I did find your full review from September, 2007. You mentioned that the Cayman Towers were VERY nice. Just out of curiousity, does the living room in the condos of the Cayman Towers have a full-sized sofa, rather than just a love seat? I looked at the pictures on their website, and it is hard to tell whether it is a full-sized sofa or just a loveseat. We are considering upgrading to the Cayman Towers, that is why I am asking. Thanks again!

Geez - looking back we have stayed in just about every room in the Caribbean.... If I recall, the 2 and 3 BRs have a smaller loveseat type couch and a couple decent chairs. The 4BR Cayman we stayed at for New Years had a full size couch as well as 2 really nice chairs. Awesome condo, but big $$$$.

As the Cayman tower is 100% new, it is nicer than the Dominican. Since we don%26#39;t spend a lot of time in the rooms, we will take the cost-saving Dominican for future trips (we only have 3 in our family).

The Caribbean is currently rated in the top 15, but they are trying to regain the coveted top 10 rating they had before the renovations. Don%26#39;t think they%26#39;ll have much trouble doing that, it just takes time to rebuild reputation after such a re-work of the resort.

Apologies, my wife just reminded me the 3BR Cayman condos have full size couches !

Enjoy !

I%26#39;ve stayed there a couple times. The rooms are nice. Some people just like to nit-pick at stuff until its dead... and let one bad thing cotrol there whole entire vacation. This property is very nice and clean.

Compass cove and shopping

How close is the Compass Cove to little beach shops and such? My husband and I are thinking about staying there in September for our anniversary, but I like to walk into the little shops. Are there any close?

Compass cove and shopping

Not too sure about Compass Cove, but it is probably like most Myrtle Beach hotels, you need to drive to where you are going. Myrtle Beach is so spread out that transportation is a must to get most places. You may be able to walk to a place here and there, but you need to drive due to the distance.

Compass cove and shopping

Just returned from Compass Cove. It was nice.Check in is rugged in the afternoon. Long lines. It is at the far end of Myrtle and there are no shops close by. Probably need to walk about 20 blocks to get the Ocean drive strip. Great shopping at Barefoot landing and Broadway at the Beach. enjoy yoour trip.

Compass Cove isn%26#39;t near any little shops (that I can remember). There might be a few beach gear places within a ';reasonable'; walking distance, otherwise as the previous poster mentioned, MB is so spread out that you will pretty much have to drive everywhere you go.

The thing about check in is that because they have the 3pm or 4pm check in time, everybody comes in at the same time. I usually call ahead like around 1pm to see if it%26#39;s available and then check in is always a breeze. No long lines. Or you could always check in and then come back to get your keys if they allow you to.

Don%26#39;t know about beach shops and such but as far as real shopping goes, Compass Cove is very close to the new Market Common residential/entertainment/shopping complex located on the old Air Force base property which will be opening this week...it%26#39;s supposed to be the big thing in MB now.

Compass Cove isn%26#39;t really near any real beach shops. There about 3 miles if not more from actual beach shops right on the main ocean blvd. There close to other shopping though. Compass Cove is on the very south end of ocean blvd. Most shops are on the Northern End.

Nicest resort with indoor pool

I%26#39;ve researched the site, but wanted to ask, what in your opinion is the nicest resort with an indoor pool? I%26#39;m looking for a resort for a small group of 18 yr olds for a birthday celebration. Not looking for a party, just deluxe resort where they can swim or get in the hot tub. Also, do you know of a place they can go that has karaoke?

Nicest resort with indoor pool

Check out Myrtle Beach Resort in south MB. It has two indoor pools, several outdoor pools and a couple of hot tubs. Also, because it is in south MB, the renourishment project has already passed this area, so there is no chance of the beach being closed. Rent a condo directly from an owner for the best deal. You can see the condos offered by owners on vacation rentals dot com or vrbo dot com. They even have a bar right on the beach for the adults. Lots of stuff to do for kids as well.

Nicest resort with indoor pool

Don%26#39;t know of a ';karaoke place'; but there are a few bars/restaurants that have it.

-Bummz on the Beach I know of.

Hotels:

-Paradise Towers at the Breakers www.breakers.com

-Island Vista www.islandvista.com

-Caribbean Resort www.caribbeanresort.com

-Camelot Resort www.camelotresort.com

Hello, in addition to VRBO you can check out the HomeAway.com site. They have hundreds of listings for condo rentals in the Myrtle Beach Area. Lot%26#39;s of photos of each unit also unlike VRBO which most listing only show two views of the rental.

Have a great vacation!

Many VRBO.com listings have 12-16 pictures of the vacation rentals. vrbo.com is part of the HomeAway network now; HomeAway bought vrbo about a year ago now. The biggest charge for advertising on vrbo.com is to add pictures. HomeAway more than doubled its size with that acquisition of vrbo and now vrbo.com is just the largest member of the HoweAway network. They also bought VacationRentals.com ; probably the 2nd largest member of the network. The only 2 perts of that network they are still keeping separate as far as advertiser payments because they do so well stand alone. You still get the ';rent with confidence'; guarantee and the tips but to advertise on those 2 parts of the network; there is another charge. The charge is greater than the rest of the network in toto. I%26#39;d think/bet viewership is too?

First off.. are you going to be staying with them? Very few hotels rent to 18 year olds. Most have to have an adult stay with them at all times in the room. Broadway at The Beach makes for great Karoke. Also, there is a nice little bar which does allow 18 year olds in as long as they get there hand stamped called Sun Up in Surfside.. A great spot.

mid-June stay...golf question

We%26#39;re coming to HHI for the first time in June (15-22). My wife was asked me I was bringing my golf clubs, I had planned on it but I wanted her approval before I made any plans. We%26#39;ll be staying in one of the Marriott%26#39;s around Harbour Town (can%26#39;t remember which one at the moment, but not the one that allows for free golf).

Being a single golfer, how difficult is it to make reservations or walk up in the morning? Any courses easier than others? Not looking to spend a fortune for a round of golf, but mid range prices are fine. How are the courses in the afternoons? With the probable heat/humidity (we don%26#39;t have that where I live)...are the courses empty in the afternoons? Thanks for any help, it%26#39;s appreciated.

mid-June stay...golf question

My husband and I go to HHI for extra long weekends every other month. He is a golfer and never has a problem getting a tee time, on the day he calls. He golfs mainly in shipyard and harbor town, and usually late morning, or late afternoon. I can tell you golf there is pricey, but he always enjoys the courses there. I hope this helps you some, have fun!

There is a new seafood place that a lot of folks are talking about, but other than that there is a place called Harold%26#39;s that Martha Stewart wrote about and now it gets packed. It is an old gas station with a bar. people still get gas there and eat steaks. That%26#39;s all they have. you have to order the steaks ahead of time. And, I responded to your other post but unless you have GPS ask someone how to get to River Road.
